Good to know that the proxy works

For install, I will said that wubi (inside windows) is easy and good for newcomers but native boot install is much better because you will have performances and no fragmentation ...
Do you know unetbootin or tuxboot ? this will help you to create a usb boot stick to install ubuntu easily.

I have no problem of heating, but maybe you can buy one of these notebook cooling pads ?

Also, tomorrow the ubuntu 11.04 beta2 will be released, try to install, it could to solve your heating pb ...

I already have a cooler pad, but its for table use and I don't need it when its on the table as as the heat doesn't bother me then, but when in college campus i use it on my lap or lawn, when on lap it kinda heats up my legs xD.
Anyway, the LAN thing does work, but not COMPLETELY some of the updates get restarted , maybe its my connection I will retry and post the the results.
As for the boot stick, I already installed it on my main HDD, so nvm, I just hope I won't have to remove it now, now that its stable just the heat problem bothers me. And I haven't used the switching scripts and enabled discreet in BIOS, are you able to switch without problems? If yes, can you tell a step by step procedure of what you did to get it working?

hi andy12345, so did you read the 34 pages of the topic
I will summarize how to use switcheroo on your 4820TG

The good news is that since I have upgraded natty 64bits from beta1 to beta2 I've no more crash of compiz.
The "bad" news is that it works but sometime it doesn't switch on the card you choose ... and also the ubuntu graphic interface doesn't works when the power cable is plugged after booting (black screen and system is frozen) ...

Follow this topic, it will explain you how to setup your laptop to use switcheroo, the script they provide is very good: http://asusm51ta-with-linux.blogspot.com/
But you have to enter your password and logout / re-login each time you will switch your video card.

Moreover you will find more infos here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics

Very strange, those scripts used to work on earlier installs now when i run them, nothing happens!!
    refer my old post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1629799&page=2
I followed the last post of that thread, it worked now I suppose I am permanently switched to Intel HD? (I would love it that way).
and I am also getting osme update problem, will check into that later.
    --Andy

PS- I forgot to mention that the heat thing is not yet solved.. also the i915 errors at start up

PPS- Also I get really slow download speeds with ubuntu for updating (havent checked anything else), using the main server.(ON windows my average download speed is 800 KBps- 1.2 MBps on ubuntu I haven´t seen it cross 200KBps) & using the update manager is way to slow and it stop in between downloading lot of times, so I use the following terminal commands
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
BUT after these if I use apt-get clean and then apt-get update & apt-get upgrade, the same amount of downloads need to be done to update,so whenever I use clean, I need to redownload all the packages? I mean clean kinda busted my updates

Use the switcheroo script to switch to the intel card.
little tip, chmod +x the switch_between_cards.sh and in its shortcut prefix the .sh script with gksudo for eg. :
    gksudo ~/switch_between_cards.sh
because the switch script need root access to the debugfs folder

Finally, optimize your laptop consumption (and for sure the laptop will stop heating ) install and search on the web for powertop optimizations.

Now my 4820TG consume about 10 to 15 W and the battery life is about 4 hours ! But I'm far away of the 8 hours promise by Acer

Re: Acer Aspire 4820TG TimelineX Thread

I just flashed BIOS 1.25 using this method:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...&postcount=223

The first method outlined on page 15 of this thread didn't work because the dos executable is too big.

Re: Acer Aspire 4820TG TimelineX Thread

hi everybody, I've 2 bugs with the 4820tg under natty b2, do you have these problems too ?

    1/
If I shutdown the laptop with the power supply cable plugged. Unplug the cable, switch on the PC => the screen stay black. Ctrl+Alt+F1 => no tty appears, screen stay black => Ctrl + Alt + F7 and a stack dump is showed.
After I have to press the Alt + SysRq + B magic keys combination to restart the PC. I plug the power cable, start the PC, and it works !

    2/
If I configure the screensaver to random, let the PC going to suspend mode, come back, resume doesn't works, the scrensaver image is showed and the PC seems frozen. So I press the Alt + SysRq + B magic keys combination to restart the PC

    FYI :
In the CMOS BIOS Setup, the graphic cards are set to switchable.
In the OS I'm under the intel i915 card. The radeon card is off.

It seems that BIOS 1.25 has solved this issue:

Re: Acer Aspire 4820TG TimelineX Thread

under natty battery indicator works like a charm, the informations are accurate.

But I've more informations about the problem that I told you (black screen when booting) it happens only under the 2.6.38-8
If I boot under the 2.6.38-7 kernel it doesn't hapen, so it is a regression for us

    I've open a bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/765216
